Shared Note: - Clan COUTTS/FARQUHARSON: Charles was a Journeyman Stonecutter in Aberdeen, Scot. ***of Aberdeenshire*** Southern District of Aberdeen in District of Old Machar. WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA, Vol. 1, 1967. ABERDEEN is the chief commercial center and port of northern Scotland. It stands at the mouth of the River Dee, on the shore of the North Sea, and has an excellent harbor. ABERDEEN is sometimes called the "Silver City by the Sea" because of its gleaming gray granite build- ings. Granite from nearby quarries is an important export. The city's growth dates from the 1800's, when methods of granite polishing were developed. The greater demand for granite resulted in industrial development. Aberdeen also serves as a commercial fishing and textile-manufacturing center. The University of Aberdeen was founded 1494.
