Was a member of general court of elections, Newport, in 1648 and 1655. In the "Ye Rule of Freeman of Ye Colonies of every Towne" James' name is on the Newport, R.I. list. In 1655-61-63 was member of Court of Commis- sioners. In 1676 it was voted, "Due to troublesome times -- King Phillip's War," that the assembly ask the advice of the most judicious inhabitants at their next sitting, including, Benedict Arnold, John Clark, James Barker (II) & 13 others. Received a land grant of what is now Westerly, RI. James II died in 1702.
