- 1922 About 15 yrs. after James' death, Mary moved to 1034 Monterey St.,
Hollister, San Benito, CA ‏(near, son, Ben)‏. She lived there continuously until
her death in 1940.
- 1934 ‏(Apr)‏ James' and Mary's old house on the farm in Stockport, Van Buren
IA, was destroyed by fire, 30 years after they had moved from the area.

According to the Birmingham Enterprise, Iowa newspaper, 12 Apr 1934:
"The dwelling on what is known as the Sam Smutz farm and occupied by the Allen Carter family, was entirely destroyed by fire last Monday afternoon. Part of the contents were saved. The Stockport fire department went to the scene of the fire and succeeded in saving some of the farm buildings."

Later, the house was rebuilt on the old quarry stone basement foundation. A photo was taken of this house on author's trip there in Jul 2005. ‏(See Appendix Pg. 5-7)‏

Although the town of Stockport did not exist at the time of their children's births, their farm property and reconstructed house is located in this town at 13692 Vine Ave., Stockport, Cedar Twp., Van Buren Co., IA. The nearest town and mail route in the old days was Hillsboro, Henry County, IA; so, most people listed their birthplace as Hillsboro.

Information from Ramona ‏(Carter)‏ Clark, to author, by e-mail dated 3 Feb 2006, Stockport, IA. ‏[She was born at the same house where James and Mary's children were born and author's mother, Eva (Loofbourrow)‏ Hockaday.] She writes: "The first building in Stockport was built in 1887. Some articles state that it was platted in 1888, laid out as a town in 1892 and incorporated in 1902. The railroad got to Stockport 31 Dec 1881. I would have been born in that house too and I kind of have the same problem as to state whether Hillsboro or Stockport. This was still on the Hillsboro rural route in 1931 and I don't know when it changed to the Stockport route. I finally just put Cedar Twp., rural Stockport although I am sure someone will find somewhere back in time I said Hillsboro and then they will be confused. At least it makes us use our brains and be good detectives."
