Shared Note: - (Research):James II and Wife Had 9 Children (?) - all born in Newport, RI. NEED NAMES & INFO. James II was born in 1617 in Essex Co., England -- came to America in 1634 on the ship "Mary & John," Robt. Sayres, Master: settled in Newport, R.I. in 1644 and Ensign in 1648. Was a member of general court of elections, Newport, in 1648 & 1655. In the "Ye Rule of Freeman of Ye Colonies of every Towne" James' name is on the Newport, R.I. list. In 1655-61-63 was member of Court of Commis- sioners. In 1676 it was voted, "Due to troublesome times -- King Phillip's War," that the assembly ask the advice of the most judicious inhabitants at their next sitting, including, Benedict Arnold, John Clark, James Barker (II) & 13 others. Received a land grant of what is now Westerly, R.I. James II died in 1702. * * * * October 1980, Wanda Barker Sheets obtained this information from: Mrs. Hugh (Grace) Barker, Keosauqua, Iowa.
