This spelling of Irven was chosen because this is how it was spelled in his parents' family Bible entry and in theWashington Death Index. His name was sometimes spelled Irvin or Ervin.

Irven worked as a conductor for the Milwaukee Railroad, which is now, the Northern Pacific Railroad. After retiring from the railroad, he sold Watkin's Products, door-to-door. Watkin's Products handled spices, patent medicine, cleaning materials and a general line of household products. Irven loved fishing, both saltwater and freshwater. He died of a heart attack at age 73 while on a fishing trip near Asford, WA.
