Both of Helen Bea's parents died young; father Ransom at age 23 in a car accident ‏(Guthrie, OK)‏ and mother Helen Rachel at age 27 ‏(St. Joseph, MO)‏. She was only 6 or 7 years old when her mother died. Helen's dying words to her mother, Mary ‏(Lynch)‏ Hockaday, were, "Please take care of my little Helen Bea." Her grandmother took her in and loved and cared for her for a number of years in the St. Joseph, MO, area. Later on she went to live with her paternal grandparents in Newton, KS, where she graduated high school and was married.
