Online internet search: Book, "The Story of Quakerism in Scotland 1650-1850," by George B. Burnet and William H. Marwick. About this Book
Covering three hundred years of history, G.B. Burnet uncovers the beginnings and downfall of the Scottish Quaker movement, which, during its period of 1650-1850, had an estimated 1500 adherents.

The story of Quakerism can be divided into four main periods: its rise during the few years of Cromwell's rule; the 'epic' period during the latter Stuart dynasty, during which it reached a height and simultaenously underwent its cruellest persecutions in Aberdeen; its gradual decline with occasional surges of social activity; and its dwindling activities in the nineteenth century.

Burnet writes with clarity and depth on the four main periods, taking the reader along the movement's history from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Angus, the Borders, the Highlands and beyond. As the study approaches the end of the nineteenth century, Burnet addresses the ultimate question of why Quakerism failed in Scotland. An Epilogue, written by William H. Marwick, Clerk to the Friends' General Meeting for Scotland, expands still further on the progress of Quakerism from 1850-1950.

"The pioneer Quakers were nothing if not strong in zeal to win converts, and the Movement had hardly obtained a footing in England before the 'dark carnal people' of Scotland were marked down for missionary enterprise."

History of the Loufbourrow Family
1996
In the book: Genealogies of New Jersey Families: From the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey
edited by Joseph R. Klett

There is a chapter written and researched by Edith Loughborough Mulford titled: John Loofbourrow of Woodbridge, Founder of the Loofbourrow Family in America.
I'm unable to copy the text, but it is noted in this chapter that the connection of John back to Britain has been unsuccessful. However the NJ Archives has a list of passengers on the Thomas and Benjamin that sailed from Scotland in Nov 1684 and landed at Perth Amboy in Feb 1685 with a John Loofbourrow listed as "miller, free passenger". We know that John was a Quaker and came to Perth Amboy, NJ in Feb 1685 and had settled in Woodbridge, NJ on Oct 7, 1686. He was active in the Amboy Monthly Meeting and it was announced in Sep 9 1687 that he would marry Gertrude Holland. However, she died before they married. He subsequently married Hannah Bunn in Nov 22, 1688 before Samuel Hale, Justice.
He acquired a great deal of land in and around Woodbridge where he had a mill.

From Linda Loofbourrow Schulte - fb site, Loofbourrow Family Ties - 6-20-2012: Hi Margie. Don't know if you belong to "Loofbourrow Family Ties" on FB, but this was posted today: "I am so pleased to share that our immigrant ancestor, John Loofbourrow, has been officially documented as an ancestor for Colonial Dames 17th Century. Received the news today from national headquarters in Washington, DC! John's service was as a miller in Middlesex County, NJ as of 1685. He died there before January 29, 1723 and his wife was Hannah Bunn. Her father is my next "project" for Colonial Dames. ‏(This lineage society requires proof of direct lineage to a person who served in the American colonies prior to 1701.

My issue had been finding sufficient proof that Rev. David Loofbourrow (1755-1846)‏ was a son of Wade Loofbourrow. Thanks to Ron Snow, and Jarret Loofboro who arranged for the posting of the Loof Bible on this FB site, I had the evidence I needed. If anyone is interested in my paper trail, please let me know."

According to Milton R. Lufburrow's research, "The town of Loughborough has existed since Roman days, and has borne the same name, under different spellings. It has had the present spelling since 1600 or a little later ...."

The origins of the Loughborough name go back to the town of Loughborough, Borough of Charnwood, Leicestershire, Midlands, England, UK. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086; it was written as Lucteburne/burg. The name means, "Luhhede's defended place". It is possible that there was a stockade around the town in its very early days. In 1221, Loughborough was granted permission by King Henry III to hold a market every Thursday and an annual two-day street fair on the 1st of August; later, the fair was changed to November and extended to three days. Currently, a large outdoor market is held at the Market Place every Thursday and Saturday; there is a monthly farmers' market as well. Since their beginnings, 788 years ago, until the present, the open Market Place, as well as, the annual street fair are still going strong. It has been said that this is the biggest street fair in Europe. Bell foundries were built in 1840; Loughborough became well-known for its making of church bells.

There is no documented proof that our Loofbourrow ancestors came from this town; however, it is a great possibility because of our Loofbourrow name and that John Loofbourrow I immigrated to America from England. Although he came to America from England, there is a slight possibility that he was originally from Scotland. Further research is ongoing.

John Loofbourrow I, a miller by trade, imported himself into the province of New Jersey in Feb 1684. He was a Quaker and settled in 1684 in Woodbridge, which is about 10 miles NW of Perth Amboy. His name appears frequently in the minutes of the Woodbridge Quaker Meetings, and always as a member of some important committee or a delegate to some convention.

There are various spellings of the Loofbourrow name. However, our line has consistently spelled it the same way as it is spelled today, "Loofbourrow", with only slight variations of Loofboro, Loveberry and Loughborough, for very brief periods of time in the late 1700's and early 1800's. David Loofbourrow I's last name was spelled Loughborough in the Revolutionary War records, but he always signed it Loofbourrow. Also, it is spelled Loofbourrow in his family Bible record, with the first entry dated 9 Dec 1779, the date of his first marriage.

Much of the information included in the Loofbourrow generations 1-4 are from: A History of the Loofbourrow, Loughborough & Lufburrow Families by Milton R. Lufburrow, Tampa, FL, 1952; most information for generations 4-7, is from the David Loofbourrow I Bible ‏(1761)‏, family record pages; also for, David Loughborough/Loofbourrow I, US Military Service Records, Revolutionary War, National Archives, Washington DC; Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications; and Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index.
