Show Details Shared Note: - Sep 1861 - 5 Nov 1864 James was a soldier in the Civil War; Company D, 14th Iowa Infantry; he fought for the Union. When he was 24 years old, he responded to the call of his country for volunteers and enlisted. He participated in the battles of: Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh), Pleasant Hill, and Old Oak. He was with Major Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks in the Red River Expedition and with Gen. A. J. Smith in the raid through Mississippi (Vicksburg). He was honorably discharged 5 Nov 1864 at Davenport, Iowa, the day before Abraham Lincoln was re-elected president.
