Born Sept. 10, 1926, in Farmington, he was the son of Frank E. and Zoe Etta Swift Muntz. On May 28, 1950, he married Dorothy J. Kutcher.
Mr. Muntz had an ice route for Farmington Artesian Ice Co. and was co-owner of Muntz and Kutcher Grocery Store and owned Muntz Farm Supply.
He attended White Oak Country School in Flat Rock and graduated from Farmington High School in 1944.
He was drafted into the Army and served in the Philippines.
He was a member of Farmington United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on several church boards.
He volunteered 18 years as a Farmington fireman and was fire chief for two years. He served six years on the Harmony Board of Education and was board president, and served on the Farmington city council and as mayor. He was on the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors and was instrumental in planning the county's jail and Lake Sugema.
He was a 60-year member of American Legion, president of Farmington Community Club and on the advisory board for Boy Scouts.
He also was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge of Iowa, past master of Mount Moriah Lodge 27, A.F. & A. M., and held state Grand Lodge offices of junior grand deacon, junior grand warden and grand master. He earned his 32nd degree and lodge honors include La Fayette Chapter No. 61, R. A.M., Ottumwa Council No. 31, R. & S.M., Malta Commandery No. 31, K.T., Davenport Consistory, A. & A.S.R., the Scottish Rite, Red Cross of Constantine-St. Ignatius Conclave, Honorary Legion of Honor-DeMolay. He served on lodge committees of Division and Reference, Public Relations, Long Range Planning, Fraternal Dead, Grand Charity Board, Appeals and Grievances, Chairman Visitors and chairman Division and References Committee. He was a Masonic district lecturer.
He sang, played banjo and performed in the Farmington Jamboree. He enjoyed telling his memories of growing up in Flat Rock.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Kathy O'Day of Farmington; two sons, Kent Muntz of Farmington and Curt Muntz of Muscatine; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Louise Rider of Farmington, Elouise Syfert of Keosauqua and Elsie Bowers of Oklahoma.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Farmington, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m with Masonic rites at 7 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Muntz will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church. Private family burial will be in Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.
A memorial has been established and the family will donate to Farmington organizations, including Indian Lake Park, EMTs and fire department, food pantry, library, cemetery association, museum and United Methodist Church.
