Betty was the kind of person who made life feel softer, steadier, and more welcoming simply by being in the room. Born to Wilbur and Dealsey Johns, she grew up moving from place to place before her tamily finally settled in Pomona, California, where she would build a life rooted deeply in faith, family, and community. In high school, she met Melvin who would become her lifelong love story. She was the song leader, he played the trumpet; and somewhere between football game and “accidental” meetings at the bottom of the school ramp, a partnership began that would last decades.
They married in 1959 surrounded by family and friends, beginning a life filled with devotion, laughter and unwavering commitment to one another. At her core, Grandma was a caretaker in the truest sense of the word. She had a gift for making people feel seen, comfortable, and important. Whether she was teaching church youth groups, hosting weddings and baby showers, organizing church cookouts, or quietly encouraging nervous brides to “relax and enjoy it,” she carried herself with warmth and ease that put people at peace. Her faith was not something she simply talked about, but something she practiced daily through hospitality, generosity, consistency and service to others. She opened her home, her time and her heart freely, creating spaces where people felt welcomed exactly as they were.
She was endlessly proud of her children, Cindy and Robby and spent her life cheering them on through every stage life brought their way. Whether it was through encouragement, support, showing up or simply believing in them fully, they always knew they had a mother in their corner. More than anything, she loved her family fiercely. She was the kind of grandmother who showed up for school pickups, sporting events, holidays in the park, vacations and countless ordinary moment that became lifelong memories because she was there. She learned how to text just to stay connected with her grandchildren once they grew older; proof that love, for her, always adapted and reached forward. She was endlessly supportive, her family’s biggest cheerleader, always ready with encouragement, practical help or simply her comforting presence. The life she built was one centered around togetherness, where everyone knew they belonged
She also carried joy in the little things. She loved gardening, cooking, scrapbooking, playing tennis, cruises, Christmas decorations, and filling her home with collections of dinner bells, Santa Clauses, and chickens in the kitchen, She loved Maui, naps in the motorhome at Newport Dunes and time spent surrounded by the people she loved most. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faithfulness, warmth and unconditional
love that continues to live on in every person lucky enough to have been cared for by her.
